Baha's is the perfect mix of beer, wine, mexican and music. My new favourite local. Open mic is especially awesome, it can be hit and miss but when it comes together it's magic. I love seeing musicians join in and jam together, often without knowing the music.

I have realised that I have been completely dedicated to reading this year. This is by chance and not something I planned, however I do believe I have gotten myself into a nice routine. I always read in bed before falling asleep...an hour at least. Now even if I'm exhausted and know I will need to re-read I still pick up my book by habit. This is a good habit!

Here is my 2011 reading so far...

L - Summer read...inspiring. I didn't want it to end and dug out my Patti Smith LP's for the full effect.

R - Just perfect in every way. Awesome text with each photo too.

L - On a Kerouac roll...Kerouac & Burroughs take turn in chapters. Names have been changed but the truth is finally out. Loved swinging between the different writing styles. Cool cats.

R - Big Sur has been added to my list of places to visit. Fantastic portrayal of Jack escaping the mayhem following 'On The Road' and escaping himself.

L - Anna Karenina I had my way with you...through hundreds and hundreds of pages. And although I may have drifted off when Levin rambled about farming...I plodded through and actually thoroughly enjoyed it.

R - A re-read...and a worthy one at that!

L - Levon Helm...thankyou for sharing the world of The Band. This will forever be a favourite! I will make it to a ramble one day!

R - I am ashamed to admit I had never read Cloudstreet. Nearly finished now...Winton is rather depressing as usual. But the characters are wonderfully real. The landscape perfectly brought to life and the writing superb.

I need a library in my house one day!

I think I may have moved up from the category of jogger to runner.

Afew years ago when I was travelling overseas by myself I got thinking about what I wanted to achieve in my life. And one thing that came up was to complete a triathlon. Not a 'team' triathlon or one of those little events where my best leg (the swim) was about 500 metres! But a decent big triathlon. One where I swim for kilometers and...that's kind of where I lost my mojo. I'm a swimmer, always have been...always will be. The water is where I am completely comfortable...running (or cycling!) is a whole other story.

I got home from my trip at the end of 2009 and decided I had better learn to do this running thing. I started out jogging and after about a minute I would have to stop and catch my breath then I would try again. This seemed to go on for months...with lots of non-running weeks thrown in! It was around this time that I made a new friend in Noosh. And a bonus perk of this friendship is that she IS a runner. And a good one at that. And kind of the opposite of me in that she says she is going to do something and she actually does it! It was the kick up the bum I needed. So I went on afew runs with Noosh and she came swimming with me afew times and it was just what I needed to get going.

Suddenly I went from slow jogger to mixing sprints into my runs, kind of enjoying getting sweaty and even afew early morning runs to beat the Alice heat. Then the adrenalin started kicking in...sometimes I would be on such a high I would start to rethink my evening wine. Usually not though. Haha.

So this brings us to present time. Around 14 weeks ago I decided to enter the Melbourne Half Marathon. I am 2 sleeps away from hopefully running 21.1km in hopefully around 2 hours.

There is that popular saying 'it's not the destination, it's the journey', I feel like that is very appropriate in this case. As the weeks of training went on, slowly going up in kilometres it became apparent for me that these runs were just as important or even more important than running a half marathon. Suddenly you become aware of running times, recovery, food, sleep, alcohol, injuries etc etc etc. Running slowly but surely starts to consume your thoughts. Keeping positive when injury happened was tough. A hamstring and calf strain happened around the 10 week mark. Resting when you are used to running most days is extremely frustrating! As is taking it easy and learning to run through pain. There are so many small hurdles when you are pushing your body.

But there are so many rewards too! Running along the bike track by the beach, breathing in the cold salty air. Seeing pelicans flying above and sometimes a fox running into the bushes to hide. Realising I have just ran 8km, 10km, 12km...16km! Each time is thrilling and there is definitely a little woohoo moment!

I can't believe now I think a 5km run is easy and that I have hardly touched wine these past few weeks! What the!!!??? I believe I have caught the running bug!

And just the other day I realised that I may be on my way to completing that triathlon one day. I have started swimming squad training again. I haven't been in a squad since high school and I didn't realise how much I missed it. Instead of swimming laps with no real aim I am working on my stroke and sprinting with very fast swimmers. Having a coach watching you swim and giving tips and motivation makes such a difference. And the best part is meeting people who also love swimming. As hey, you would have to love it to head to the pool at 8pm on a Monday night! A reminder of what I love about swimming.

Hmm there is still this cycling business to work out...I will get there.

So...time for some carbs and an early night!

I read some amazing books last summer. Starting with Just Kids by Patti Smith. A beautiful and sincere love story, I read it in about two weeks I think. I didn't want it to end as I knew I could never again read it with fresh eyes. It was just perfect.

I have been reading more about metal music from the 70's onwards. I don't own any metal records, however from what I have heard its a style of music that I find confronting and frightening. I would like to see some metal gigs when I'm back in Melbourne, as long as I have someone to hold my hand! It is disturbing that the following reads like a horror movie.

If you don't like horror movies...a warning...don't read on!

"Ohlin's suicide on 8 April 1991, Mayhem vocalist Per Yngve "Pelle" Ohlin (aka 'Dead') committed suicide in a house shared by the band. While fellow musicians often described Ohlin as a strange and introverted person off-stage, for his on-stage performances he would make himself look like a corpse and would cut his arms while singing.

He was found with slit wrists and a shotgun wound to the head; the shotgun was owned by Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth (aka 'Euronymous'). Ohlin's suicide note read "Please excuse all the blood" and included an apology for firing the weapon indoors. Before calling the police, Aarseth went to a nearby store and bought a disposable camera to photograph the corpse, after re-arranging some items. One of these photographs was later used as the cover of a bootleg live album called Dawn of the Black Hearts.

Eventually, rumors surfaced that Aarseth made a stew with pieces of Ohlin's brain and made necklaces with bits of Ohlin's skull. The band later denied the former rumor, but confirmed that the latter was true. Moreover, Aarseth claimed to have given these necklaces to musicians he deemed worthy. Mayhem bassist Jørn Stubberud (aka 'Necrobutcher') noted that "people became more aware of the [black metal] scene after Dead had shot himself ... I think it was Dead's suicide that really changed the scene."

Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.

Troy is a new/old friend of mine.

"So I'm in New Zealand with my friend Kevin.

We flew into Auckland on the 5th of Feb and stayed at his sisters. The yard had feijoia's and banana's so I was happy minus a killer migraine.

We hitched(about 600km in one day!) down to Wellington (which I'm thinking of moving to) and then hitched back up to Bulls to Camp A Low Hum without a ticket (was sold out). Luckily one of the event organizers picked up up at 11pm and we ended up getting in and working as stage-hands (as well as working the front gate that night at midnight until about 3am).

We played there too! Put together a trio with the drummer from Skul Hazzards and played an improv noisy doom set. Was rad. The recording sounds good. The festival was killer. Not a lot of band I really dug, but, the best festival I've been to. It felt like school camp without the teachers. I ripped my only pants dancing to Rhianna while Liam from My Disco was DJing at 2am on the first night.

Got new jeans now.

In Wellington we played a flute/guitar duo on a rooftop. Good recording too.

Hitching has been fine. Lots of great characters. We've clocked up about 2,000km.

The ferry from Wellington to Picton was all smooth sailing. The landscape breathtaking (perhaps not as breathtaking as the week coming).

The longest ride we got was nuts. This dude flyyyyyying about 120km the whole way while drinking cans of beer along a winding highway through hills and along the coast. Better than the great ocean road maybe.

In Christchurch we stayed at Anna's (Kiki) place. Met her at Camp, she was doing stage stuff. It was fun riding around Christchurch on old bikes with a couple of scruffy cute girls and their pet birds.

Every place we've been we've bumped into friends, friends of friends or folk from Camp'.

Tomorrow Kevins folks are driving us into Fiordland National Park where we will tramp the Routeburn Trail. It's a three day hike that will be quite an experience. National Geographic apparently listed it in their top 11 walks around the world.

soon i will be able to see the ocean every day...

soon i will be driving from the desert to the coast...

which will make me feel a little like this...

but for the next week i need sleep...more sleep.

photo shoot last weekend & this weekend.

i plan to snooze on the couch all friday night & sleep in saturday morning.

everything seems to be working out...

looking forward to spending time with old friends & making new friends.

looking forward to what the next year holds...i have a feeling its going to be a good one.

I have been feeling uninspired lately...too busy and too many emotions flying around.

today i took photos of old houses in eastside after the rain.

i am housesitting for another week.

i have been drinking alot of coffee & painting/drawing in the sunroom.

i am poor from car expenses & buying friends art.

so quiet weekend at home.

my ex boyfriend broke his nose.

but it's fixed now...he is coming over to watch dvds this week.
